We want to make you aware of a new banking rule in Mexico. The banks can no longer
change US Dollars into Pesos. I advise you to change some money into pesos at your bank
before you leave, because the airport has a terrible exchange rate, and bring US Dollars in
smaller denominations to spend in El Pescadero and Todos Santos, because many of the
small vendors will not be able to make change for large American bills.

In 1723 Father Jaime Bravo established Todos Santos as the mission of Nuestra Senora del
Pilar de La Paz. It eventually reached mission status & was named Santa Rosa de Todos
Santos in honor if its benefactor, Dona Rosa de la Pena. At that time the population of La
Paz mission was transferred here, and then it was later abandoned in 1749. Since that time it
has carried the name of Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Todos Santos. The village economy
prospered during the last half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century
participating in sugar production. In 1850 there were eight sugar mills in the immediate area.
Sugar production lasted nearly 100 years with most of the beautiful colonial style buildings
and craftsman style homes financed by the wealth of the sugar enterprise. Many of these
buildings fell into decay in the 1950's when there was a prolonged drought. The water table
dropped drastically and wells stopped producing, causing a great loss of cane crops. The low
price of sugar after WWII caused a drastic economic decline for the area which forced many
of the families living here to leave their homes. Now the rich farmlands have been
transformed and the town prospers from the rich fertile soil producing an abundance of
Poblano chilis, basil, strawberries, Avocado, Papaya and Mango orchards. There is also a
vital fishing industry as well as cattle ranching. Since the early 1980's there has been an
influx of tourist activity due to the expansion of Mexico Highway 19 from La Paz through to
Cabo San Lucas. In recent years many Fine Artists, artisans and crafts people from all over
mainland Mexico and the world have moved into the area. Todos Santos is becoming a
celebrated Cultural and Artistic center. There is great optimism that eco-tourism will be our
future...
